You can create some really good imitations of gold leaf, but nothing is ever quite as good as the real thing.
While frames in France and southern Europe were flamboyantly carved and gilded, in the more “puritan” north the frames tended to be more austere, using simple polished wood laminates and veneers.
Today veneered frames can be “cutting edge” with their wonderful colour and dramatic grain.
